12th class is the base in a student’s life when he or she starts thinking about their career. Not only students but also their parents start thinking  about it. Although it is not easy to decide about one’s career which is the most important and is the most difficult decision to take. For a young person, after pursuing 12th from Medical stream, there are a large number of career opportunities but  to choose the right one is  the important. It's not easy for all to go further as so many factors are there which decide career after 12th like financial problems, family problems, lack of knowledge and interest etc.

The aspirants can opt from courses related to Biosciences such as MBBS, BAMS, BHMS, BUMS, BVSc, BDS, Nursing, Pharmaceuticals, Lab Technician, OT Helper, Agriculture related courses etc. 

So here should be no confusion. While choosing one’s career, think about all the factors like finance and interest of the child. We have large options to choose from. Taking a wrong decision, would result in completely damaging one's career. In this article, we will understand about the options for the students and about how could they  wisely choose their career destinations according to circumstances.
IMPORTANT:  For most of the courses the Entrance Test to be cleared is NEET. Its registration starts in the start of December. So not to be late. Otherwise you will lose opportunity for a year. 

Suggestion: Don’t compel your ward to choose as per your will. Let it be decided by your ward.

  1. MBBS:
 
MBBS is a dream for every student pursuing 12th in Medical Stream and it should be. Being an MBBS, you have Reputation, Money, Status and everything one should wish in his/her life. But it is not easy to get admission in MBBS. Secondly it is very costly in private institutes. Although Govt. institutes offer this course at very low costs compared to private institutions, but it's very hard to get admission in Govt. institutions. To get admission in MBBS one has to qualify the NEET test with very high rankings as admission is granted as per merit in NEET. Students with upper merit get admission in Govt. Medical colleges and subsequently in other colleges.
MBBS is a five year and six months degree program including one year of rotational internship in hospitals, health centres, and health camps organised by non-profit organisations (NGOs). After completion of the course students have to register themselves with Indian Medical Association (IMA) to become Certified Medical Practitioner.
An MBBS can choose specialization in many fields like Medicine, Surgery, ENT, Nephrology, Gynae and Paediatrics, Anesthesia, Cardiology, Organ Transplantation, Neurology, Ophthalmology, Pathology etc.
Average income of MBBS is about 3 lacs PM.

2. BAMS: 
            
BAMS is an undergraduate degree course of  five and half year duration (including one year internship with stipend) based on thousands years old Indian method of treatment using herbs. These days the world and even WHO has given approval to this Indian system known as AYURVEDA. Admission criteria is the same as MBBS i.e. based on merit in NEET.
Candidates who successfully pass BAMS may choose following as profession:
Physician, Clinical Research Associate, Registered Medical Practitioners, Medical Supervisor in companies of  Ayurveda medicines, Manager (after pursuing Masters in Public Health, Masters in Health Administration and MBA in Hospital and Healthcare Management), Health Supervisor/ Therapist, Supervisors in health centres of hotels and resorts, Teachers in Ayurvedic Medical colleges (after Post Graduation) and Ayurvedic Drugs Manufacturer (Self Employed).
Fee structure: It varies from institution to institution. Some Govt. Institutions charge as low as Rs 50000 to 2 Lacs for full course whereas some other institutions may charge Rs 6 to 7 Lacs for full course and may be much higher upto 18 Lacs.
Average Salary of BAMS varies from Rs 20000 to 1 Lac.

3. BHMS:
This is the Third most popular system of treatment with medicines known as Homeopathy medicines. This is an undergraduate program of five and half year duration (including one year internship). It is a modern system to which the vast majority of  people prefer these days due to no side effects from this treatment. Admission criteria is based on merit in NEET but some institutes undergo their personnel Entrance Exams such as PUCET , KEAM, IPU CET, BVP CET .
Candidates who successfully pass BAMS may choose the following as profession: Doctor, Medical Assistant, Public Health Specialist, Therapist, Homeopathic Pharmacist, Lecturer, Consultant, Scientist, Spa Consultant etc.
Fee Structure: It ranges from 2 to 3 Lacs .
Average Salary ranges from 3 to 5 Lacs PA. Private Practitioners could earn much more than the salaried.

4. BDS:
            

B.D.S. is an undergraduate degree course of five years duration, of which four years will be for theory, while one year will be for rotatory internship. The curriculum of BDS courses is being regulated by the Dental Council of India. Students seeking admission to BDS should have to clear NEET. After successfully passing the BDS course, the professional is called a Dentist.
Fee structure: Fee structure depends upon the type of the institution. Govt. Institutions charge fees as low as Rs. 50000, whereas it may go high upto 12 Lacs in private institutes.
Salary: Salary ranges between 4 to 6 lacs PA. Private Dental Clinics could earn much more than salaried.


 5. BVSc:

Bachelor of Veterinary Sciences (BVSc) is a Five and half year course with the last six months for compulsory internship. The  course is designed to make students well versed in diagnosis & treatment of animal diseases, understand animal husbandry. Candidates seeking admission to BVSc have to rank high in AIPVT and other BVSc Entrance exams . A veterinarian could go into Govt. Sector or Private sector or in research for breeding and care firms, The common BVSc job sectors are: Agriculture Sectors, Government Animal Husbandry Departments, Poultry Farms, Veterinary Hospitals and Clinics, Defence Dog training centres, Zoological Parks, Aviaries, Wildlife Sanctuaries, Research Centres and Institutes, Animal Breeding Centres, etc.

Average fee: Average fee for complete BVSc course  ranges between 1.5 Lacs to 4 lacs. 
Average salary: Average salary of a Veterinarian ranges between 5 Lacs to 10 lacs PA.

6. Nursing/Registered Nurse Course:
Due to fast increase in health facilities & number of hospitals over the globe, there is tremendous increase in demand of Regd. Nurses all over the world & in India too. So nowadays, Nursing is becoming a blooming career option throughout the globe. Although many institutions give direct admission to nursing courses, many reputed institutions have their entrance exams. Many types of Nursing courses are available in India these days.The following are the courses available for becoming a Regd. Nurse:
  • ANM (Auxiliary Nursing & Midwifery Course)- Duration of this course is two years. Its examination authority is the Nursing Examination Board. They are registered as R. ANM.
  • GNM (General Nursing & Midwifery Course)- Duration of this course is three years. Its examination authority is also the Nursing Examination Board. They are registered as R.N & RM.
  • B.Sc. (Basic)- Duration of this course is four years. Its examination is conducted by different Universities  across the country. They are registered as R.N & RM.
  • Apart from the courses mentioned above, Regd. Nurses can upgrade their qualifications doing post graduation courses like B.Sc. (Post Basic), M.Sc. in Nursing, M.Phil. and even Ph D.
Fee Structure: Average course fee ranges from INR 20000 to 2 Lacs depending upon types of institutions.
Average Salary:  Average salary ranges from INR 2 to 5 Lacs PA.

7.Diploma/Degree inPharmaceuticals:
Pharmacy is a term related to medicines. So a pharmacist is concerned with manufacturing, prescription and provision of medicines. Pharmacy provides aspirants a good career option. A pharmacist could opt for jobs in hospitals, pharmacies, drug manufacturing units, research labs etc. This job carries big responsibilities as medicines are to be given or prepared with high efficiencies and just a small mistake may lead to high risks to mankind. Although many institutions give direct admission to Pharmacy courses, many reputed institutions have their own entrance exams like WBJEE, OJEE, Gujarat Common Entrance Test (GUJCET), BITSAT, MHT-CETUPSEE, TS EAMCET, AP EAMCET, KCET. Some courses available in India these days are as follows:
  • D. Parmacy (Diploma in Pharmacy)- Duration of this course is two years. It is a foundation course in Pharmacy. Following are entrance exams for admission to D. Pharmacy: GPAT, JEE Pharmacy, AU AIMEE, CPMT, UPSEE, PMET. Its examination authority is different from state to state in India but these all are approved by the Pharmacy Council of India.
Fee Structure: Average course fee ranges from INR 1 Lac to 2 Lacs.

  • B. Pharmacy (Bachelor of Pharmacy)- Duration of this course is four years. It is an undergraduate course in Pharmacy. Following are entrance exams for admission to B. Pharmacy: GPAT, JEE Pharmacy, Delhi CET, Goa CET, Gujarat CET, KCET, UKSEE, UPSEE.in Its examination is conducted by different Universities across the country and are approved by Pharmacy Council of India.

8. Lab Technician: (DMLT/BMLT)

  • DMLT: This is Diploma course in Medical laboratory Technology. Its duration is two years. Different institutes working under Council of Paramedical Science of India impart Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology. After successfully completing the course candidates get jobs in Government Hospitals, Private Clinics, medical labs, Colleges & Universities, Military Services, Medical Content Writing, etc.

  • BMLT: This is an undergraduate course in Medical laboratory Technology, also known as B.Sc MLT. Its duration is three years. During the program the candidates learn and diagnose, detect and treat diseases. Additionally the program deals with the collecting of information's sampling, reporting, testing and documentation. Many institutes in India  impart Degrees in Medical Laboratory Technology. This is a Diploma course in Operation Theater Technology. Its duration is two years. OT Technicians help Surgeons during operation of patients inside operation theaters. They make all the arrangements for operations in Operation Theaters before the Surgeon comes and help him during the operation. Admission to this course depends upon good marks in 10+2. After successfully completing the course candidates get jobs in Government & Private Hospitals etc.

10. Diploma in Radiology:
The Diploma course in Radiology Technology is a three year full time course. The candidate must have passed 10+2 with minimum 60% marks. For admission , the Govt. Institutions arrange interviews/counsellings, whereas in private institutes  students will have to clear entrance exams and personal interviews. After successful completion of course, the candidates get jobs in Private care centers, Occupational Health Centers, Radiotherapy Research organizations, Radiotherapy Equipment manufacturers etc. at positions like Diagnostic Radiographer, Radiation Therapy Technologist, Radiation Protection Specialist, Therapy Radiographer, X-ray Technician, etc..
