12th class is the base when a child enters into young & also their parents start thinking  about their career. Although it is not easy to decide about one’s career which is the most important and is most difficult to take. For a young, after pursuing 12th from a non-medical stream, there are a large number of career opportunities but  to choose the right one is  important. It's not easy for all to go further as so many factors are there which decide career after 12th like financial problems, family problems, lack of knowledge, and interest etc.

Non-medical stream opens a vast career options for candidates after 12th. They can opt any course from any stream including Arts & Commerce but not related with Medical stream. Whereas all other streams are limited to their own streams only.

So here is it when confusion starts. When we have large options to choose from, we generally feel it difficult to make decisions and get confused. Taking a wrong decision, would result in completely damaging one's career. In this article, we will understand about the options for students and about how they can wisely choose their career destinations according to circumstances.


Based on interest in subject, following are some fields that a student can choose:
  1. For a student who has interest in Mathematics can opt from Applied Mathematics, Computational Mathematics, Geometric Analyst, Statistics.
  2. For a student who has interest in Physics can opt from Molecular Physics, Nuclear Physics, Optical Physics, Astrophysics, Geophysics, Electronics & Communications, Nautical Sciences.
  3. For a student who has interest in Chemistry can opt from Biochemistry, Nuclear Chemistry, Organic chemistry, Physical Chemistry.

Some available degree programs are as follows:-
  1. Engineering:
This is a four year degree program. After completion of the course students could go for jobs in MNCs and Govt. sector too.  Before admission, candidates have to appear in an entrance exam conducted by CBSE called JEE(Joint Entrance Exam). Students get admission into Govt. as well as private colleges as per their rank in JEE. The following are some courses under Engineering.:-
B. Tech.: This is a four year degree program. After completion of the course students could go for jobs in MNCs and Govt. sector too.  Before admission, candidates have to appear in an entrance exam conducted by CBSE called JEE(Joint Entrance Exam). Students get admission into Govt. as well as private colleges as per their rank in JEE.
Students  can choose the following courses in B. Tech. : Aerospace Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, Computer Science Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering.

Salary ranges between 2-6 lacs PA.
Mechanical Engineering: This is three years for diploma and four years for degree course. Candidates should qualify JEE(Joint Entrance Exam). to get admission in Govt. as well as private colleges as per their rank in JEE for this course. In this field students learn about working on heavy machines/tools, their designing/analysis/manufacturing/repairs etc. After completion students find a career in  Govt. Sector as well as in MNCs firms.
Fees ranges between 4-10 lacs for this course. 
Salary ranges between 2.5-7 lacs PA.
B. Arch. :  It's a five years degree course. B. Arch. Students learn about architecture, how to study drawings, how very big structures of the modern world are to be made. The Entrance Test for B Arch is called NATA. After completion, they find jobs in  Govt. Sector as well as in Private Architectural firms where they are paid  with a handsome salary. Many other Engineering courses are there like  Aircraft Maintenance Engineering, Textile Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Automobile Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering,, Agricultural Engineering, Mining, Petroleum and offshore, Information Technology(IT), Telecommunication, Power, Sound, Automation, applied Marine Information Technology and Communication, Biomedical, Biotechnology etc.

2. B.Sc./B.Sc.(Hon)

It is a three-year long academic degree program after 12th non-medical. It may be a simple B.sc or honors degree in any of the non medical subjects (Physics/Chemistry/ Mathematics). Some courses like B.sc in agriculture and farming and nursing are four year academic degree programs. 
Computer science, forestry, hotel management, nautical science, environmental science, and biotechnology are some more options where students could go for finding their great career.

3. Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics or Statistics

Maths is the key subject in most of the career requirements. In more than 70% jobs around the world, maths is the primary requirement. So Bachelor in maths or statistics is one of the best bachelor courses in non medical stream which leads to best jobs in banking and finance sector. Candidates must be master in maths subject. Here are some of the fields open after completing this degree : Mathematician, Statistician, College Math Professor, Market Research Analyst, Economist, Aerospace Engineer, Financial Analyst, Data Scientist, Astronomer  etc.

4. LLB
LLb is one of the premier careers in one’s life. Non medical students could opt for this course after 10+2. CLAT ( Common Law Admission Test) is the Entrance Test conducted in rotation by top Law Universities for graduate (LLB) and postgraduate (LLM) law courses. It  is the only legitimate course in India  to work as a lawyer and of course to become a Judge with some experience. It is a four year degree  course after 10+2. Candidates have to get experience with some already practising registered LLB Lawyers to start his/her career as an independent lawyer.

5. BBA/MBA

With an increasing number of MNCs, management courses are in big demand all over the world. BBA is a three years degree whereas an integrated course of BBA+MBA is five year long. After BBA, students have to qualify CAT, MAT or CMAT for admission to MBA. Students get highly paid jobs after this degree. An MBA could choose from Banking & Finance, Information System Management, Management Consulting, Data analytics, Entrepreneurship etc.

Salary ranges between 3.5-12 lacs PA.


6. BCA/MCA 

This is a three year degree course. Students go for IT sector jobs like software developer, web developer, programmer, software consultant, technical writer etc. MCA is a two year post graduate degree whereas integrated BCA+MCA is a five year degree program. Students get relatively highly paid jobs in the IT sector or they can start their own business in web developing.

Average Salary ranges between 2-5 lacs PA.
 7. Hotel Management
Depending upon cost and duration , there are Certificate courses (six months to one year), Diploma (Two years) and degree (three years). Students get opportunities in Hotels, restaurants, Cruises, Resorts and casinos etc. This is a white collar job with better opportunities to explore one’s possibilities.

8. National Defense Academy (NDA

Candidates could choose to serve their country by choosing a career as a defence officer in the Armed Forces. National defense  academy provides  training to the candidates for Army, Navy or Air Force. Candidates should appear in the Entrance exam for NDA followed by interview, and medical processes for the selection of candidates. UPSC organizes the Entrance exam for NDA twice a year(April & September) for non medical students. The candidate must be 16.5 to 19 years old to become eligible.

9. Nautical Sciences
This is the study of navigation and seamanship where candidates learn how to manage duties of ship like sailing or navigation. This course offers candidates with a very exciting career. Duration for the Degree course is three years whereas Diploma is for one year. After successful completion of this course, the candidate becomes a deck officer and other officer cadre jobs available on ships.
Fee structure:
For undergraduate courses: INR 2-8 Lacs. 
For postgraduate courses: INR 1-3 Lacs.
For diploma courses: INR 1-3 Lacs.
Average Salary ranges between 6-20 lacs PA.

10. Commercial Pilot Training: 
Non-medical students can also opt for a career in Civil Aviation as Commercial Pilot. Students have to pass a Pilot Aptitude test and medical examination to become eligible and undergo training. Commercial Pilot training is very expensive & needs lots of money. Duration of course depends on the candidate and the fleet of aircraft that a Flying Training school possesses. Average course period is 15 months in India and 8–12 months abroad.
Average fee structure ranges between 5-50 lacs.
Average salary ranges between 6-40 lacs PA.
